Definite form of nouns – bestämd form
✏ We use it when:
1) We mention something the second time or more:
Jag ser ett hus vid vägen. Huset är rött. – I see a house alongside the road. The house is red.
2) We see what we are talking about:
I show my guests a new sofa saying:
Jag köpte soffan. – I bought the couch/sofa.
3) After demonstrativa pronomen (demonstrative pronouns):
den där pennan – this pen
det här huset – this house
det där fönstret – this window
de här blommorna – these flowers
de där borden – these tables
4) We talk about something that is one:
kungen – usually the king of Sweden
himlen – sky
solen – sun
5) In time expressions (tidsuttryck):
på sommaren (in the summer), på morgnarna (in the mornings), på påsken (on Easter)
6) Logical part of something:
Vi checkade in på hotellet. Receptionisten var mycket trevlig. – We checked in at the hotel. The receptionist was nice.
Han har en fin lägenhet. Köket är ganska stort där. – We have a nice apartment. The kitchen is rather big there.
7) We talk about something that is ours or someone’s:
Jag borstar tänderna. – I brush my teeth.
Hon borstar tänderna. – She brushes her teeth.
Jag kan göra det efter jobbet. – I can do it after work. (my work)
8) After förra, hela, första, andra
förra månaden – last month
hela dagen – all day
första dejten – the first date
andra bussen – the second bus
